DANCE LESSONS SMABTO

Today, we’d like to introduce you to mercurial pop trio Dance Lessons, aka Ann (producer and songwriter), Nat (guitars) and Tom (bass), who have released their debut single ‘SMABTO’. In contrast to many songs about relationships, this London outfit holds up their hands to say that sometimes these connections we make aren’t karmic or self-improving, they can just be obvious errors. As the band outline: “Relationships are complicated and messy, but sometimes they’re just straight up mistakes. This isn’t a serious song about love, but more a lighthearted take on the people that come into our lives and turn out to be mistakes.” They present this alternative opinion in a weaving piece of soul, funk, jazz and pop reminiscent of Karen O, Sharon Van Etten and Danger Mouse. We love the space that the contemporary jazz instrumentation is given alongside Ann’s beguiling vocals, and therefore keeps our attention throughout. The chaos and distance of it all reflects those mistakes in hindsight. - Hannah Thacker
